I slept with a silk pillowcase for a month — and it cleared my skin and made my hair smoother

silk pillowcase

  • Who’d have thought that a silk pillowcase could make such a difference for your skin and hair?

  • My skin looked clearer and younger, my hair was less prone to tangles and creases, and I slept like a baby.

  • I had less wild hairs, sleep creases, and had to do a lot less hair maintenance.

When many of us think about beauty essentials and hacks for better skin and hair, the last thing we’d ever think about is our bedding. But the secret to clearer, younger skin, and silkier, healthier hair just might depend on where you lay your head at night.

According to many bloggers and experts, silk pillowcases are a tried and true anti-aging essential, and I decided to put it to the test. I slept with a silk pillowcase for a month and my skin and hair felt so much healthier.

My skin looked younger.

Silk doesn’t just make us feel more elegant. It has very real benefits. Marnie Nussbaum MD, a New York City dermatologist, told Well+Good that cotton pillowcases can increase friction, leading to more wrinkles, whereas silk is more gentle to the skin and can potentially prevent wrinkles from sprouting.

During my month of using a silk pillowcase, I definitely felt like my wrinkles were less pronounced, especially around my eyes and mouth.

My hair was less prone to tangles.

silk pillow caseWhen you sleep with your hair on the average pillowcase, it’s all too easy for your hair to get tangled. Nothing says "good morning" like a head full of knots. Especially when you have curly hair, a silk pillowcase can be a lifesaver.

By the end of the month, my hair felt like it had sustained less damaged than it would have if I’d used my usual cotton pillowcase. Overall, my hair felt smoother and was much easier to work with. Better hair while I slept? Yes, please.

I had less "sleep creases."

Some nights, when you have a rough night of sleep, you wake up with creases on your face. This is often caused by the harsh, thick fabric of a cotton pillowcase.

By sleeping with a silk pillowcase, I was able to cut these "sleep creases" down completely, which made it much easier to roll out of bed and get my day started rather than trying to figure out how to get rid of these unsightly folds.

My acne cleared up.

One unexpected result of sleeping on a silk pillowcase was that I slept much better than usual. I tend to be a hot sleeper, and the cool silk helped me fall asleep more quickly, resulting in a better night’s sleep. As a result, my skin got clearer, and I think it's probably because more sleep means better skin overall.

Too, the elegance of the silk pillowcase made me feel more inclined to regularly wash my sheets, and cleaner sheets gave me clearer skin. These two factors combined definitely helped lessen the likelihood that I’d wake up with a zit.

My dark circles almost disappeared.

Speaking of sleeping better, by getting a cooler and more restful nights sleep thanks to the silk pillowcase, my dark circles lessened in intensity. I didn’t have to rely as heavily on under eye concealer and could instead count on my silk pillowcase to make sure I slept safe and sound.

Getting rid of my dark circles gave my skin a healthier, happier look, and almost made me look like I was glowing.

After giving this experiment a go, I’ve decided to swap out my cotton pillowcase for a silk one permanently. I can only imagine the benefits my hair and skin will reap in the long run based on the positive changes I’ve seen after doing so for just one month.

Apple Cider Vinegar Wart Removal

Skin tags or warts are a very common aliment among men and women of all ages but are difficult to cure. A highly popular method to treat warts in the comfort of your own home is the apple cider vinegar wart removal method. Before we look at assessing the problem, it is important to understand what causes warts in the first place.

In general terms warts are a result of the human papilloma virus which is highly contagious and difficult to get rid of. This is due to the many forms of the virus that are in existence and typically the location of the wart, is determined by the type and nature of the virus causing it. The virus is easily contracted through broken skin such as cuts and when another carrier touches these areas (skin to skin) the virus is passed across. Although unsightly and depending upon the location, embarrassing, these types of warts can be easily treated. The problem with such remedies like apple cider vinegar wart removal is that they typically do not address the cause of the problem there before there is a high probability they will return again.

Although warts around the genitalia area are the most embarrassing (and cause the most pain) the more common locations tend to be the feet or hands. This is because many people share soaps and washing items within the household and when a member of family is infected it is very easy to transmit the infection.

There are a variety of home remedies with which to combat warts one of the most common being apple cider vinegar wart removal techniques. Although this treatment can help sufferers reduce the problem it lacks a permanent cure. Having suffered with skin tags for many years I can sympathize with anyone suffering with warts. In my case, skin tags under the armpits used to cause some real problems especially during the summer months. Warts and skin tags are easily aggravated through constant movement and can become very sore indeed to the extent you avoid doing physical exercise.

The problem with most home remedies including apple cider vinegar wart removal, is that they ordinarily do not stop the condition from recurring. Thankfully for me, there is a new remedy in the marketplace now which has a staggering success rate in terms of removal of warts and skin tags.

The best part about this new remedy is that a trip to the doctors or indeed hospital (along with the scar), is not required given the treatment is something which can be applied at home without resorting to surgery to cut away the skin tags. If you have ever looked into freezing skin tags this again is not a treatment which you would want to put yourself through lightly. Not only does this new wart removal technique rid your body of warts but also all forms of skin tags and even those embarrassing genital warts. Even more effective is that this type of treatment only needs applying once upon the affected area and within a few days it is removed for good. No more dreading the heat, just permanent and quick wart removal.

We tried PillPack, the pharmacy startup Amazon acquired for $1 billion, and we can see why it has big pharmacies terrified

Pill Pack
My PillPack arrived in a simple white box marked filled with packets of prescriptions and information on when to take them.

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

For most Americans, picking up a prescription involves a stop by the local pharmacy every month or so.

And while shoppers can go online for everything from clothing to groceries, that isn't the case yet for prescription drugs.

That's starting to change. In June, Amazon announced its plans to acquire PillPack , a small startup that mails prescriptions to people who take multiple medications for a reported $1 billion . The news sent a whole host of pharmaceutical and drug-wholesaler stocks tumbling at the time.

So we decided to take a firsthand look at PillPack's prescription service to get a sense of how it works, and to better understand how it could fit into Amazon's future healthcare ambitions.

Amazon is not just a huge emerging advertising player — it is also spending boatloads on its own ads

Amazon isn't just raking in ad revenue , it's also spending considerable ad dollars itself.

The e-commerce giant is the biggest programmatic ad buyer, according to data crunched by MediaRadar, a New York-based advertising intelligence company. Amazon accounts for more than 10% of the spend of the top 50 programmatic advertisers alone, and spends 1.5 times more than the next biggest programmatic spender, Microsoft.

Specifically, Amazon ran digital ads across more than 1,300 different sites in the first quarter of 2018. In that time, Amazon advertised over 100 different products and services digitally and ran display, video, native, and mobile ads.

"Amazon is pouring billions into marketing, and a big piece of that pie is dedicated to programmatic," said Todd Krizelman, CEO & Co-founder at MediaRadar, declining to give more specifics about Amazon's ad spending.

Despite pitfalls, major brands are pumping lots of money into automated digital ads

Programmatic advertising is the automated way marketers buy ads across thousands of websites online, relying on algorithms that determine the best possible pricing and the best time to run a campaign.

MediaRadar used its sales intelligence platform to examine over 76,000 brands placing ads programmatically, scrubbing through data across across ad exchanges like AppNexus and OpenX, programmatic exchanges like Nativo and Sharethrough as well as ad buying platforms such as Google's DoubleClick, MediaMath and DataXu.

The firm also compared the spending of brands in the first quarter of 2018 with the first quarter of 2017 to determine any year-over-year changes. According to this data:

  • 94% of the top 50 programmatic spenders in Q1 2017, like Walmart and Verizon, were running programmatic placements again in Q1 2018.
  • Further, three-quarters or 75% of all brands tracked placed digital ads programmatically in Q1 2018.

"Despite concerns over transparency, advertisers continue to invest in programmatic," said Krizelman. "It is the preferred method for transacting media for many advertisers and it doesn't appear to be changing."

He isn't wrong. More than $46 billion will be spent on programmatic advertising in the US this year, according to eMarketer and 86.2% of all digital display ads will be bought via automated channels by 2020.

Here are the the top 10 programmatic advertisers, according to MediaRadar's data:

  1. Amazon
  2. Microsoft
  3. Wayfair
  4. TaxAct
  5. Charles Schwab
  6. Weight Watchers
  7. Sprint
  8. Coors Light
  9. Geico
  10. Dell

You've Got the T-Shirt, Now Move on!

You've got the t-shirt, now move on

Life has a funny way of showing you how far you have come even when you do not think you have moved.

As I opened my studio this morning, I knew I had to arrive early as the Kelowna Apple Triathlon was in full swing and the main action was right in front of our Center.

Watching the triathletes stream by the front of the studio did make me realize how far I have come in my life. Way back in the early 1980's, I became interested in this new sport which started as a bet among friends in Oahu as to who was the fittest: the swimmer, the cyclist, or the runner. The first Ironman Triathlon happened in 1978 with 15 participants. A few years later, the event was moved to the Big Island and word started to spread that this crazy new sport called Triathlon was the best test of fitness.

Like many triathletes of my generation, there were very few events in the early 1980's. It was not really until 1982 that the Triathlon really done on. In 1982, a competitor in the Hawaii Ironman named Julie Moss was leading the women's race before collapsing a few yards from the finish line. Those who watched the live event on ABC Sports will never forget watching Julie Moss literally crawl and drag herself across the finish line to finish second. Her act of determination and will have a direct correlation with an explosion in the interest of the sport. Now adrenaline junkies and endurance athletes everywhere had a new challenge - survive the Ironman Triathlon.

Over the next decade the number of triathlon races being hosted were on a meteoric rise. The Ironman race of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run was now offered in different lengths to suit all abilities. The most popular length (Olympic distance) was the 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, and 10 km run. This was the first distance of triathlon I participated in. The race was in Nelson, BC. I remember that my training for the event consist of a few runs over 5 km, some swims in the local pool, and bike rides around the community. I survived that first race and I was hooked!

I went on to compete in numerous other triathlons and running races but my goal was always to do the Ironman and go to Hawaii. In 1989, I competed as a teenager in Ironman Canada. By this time my training was serious and I had a few mentors who had done the new Ironman in Penticton to guide me. I trained, worked, ate, and slept. In August of 1989 I felt ready for the race. It was the most difficult thing I had ever done in my life. I can still remember how exhausting that race was. I did well, but not well enough to qualify for the World Championship Ironman in Hawaii.

The next year, I tried again and in 1990 I qualified for the Ironman in Hawaii. I was exhausted and elated. The next morning I stood in line and paid my registration for the race in Hawaii which was only two months away. I went home and decided to take a few days off training before re-committing to my training. The following days and weeks after arriving home were a pivotal point in my life. I developed chronic fatigue syndrome and literally could not look at my bike. I could not my body to do any exercise. The Ironman in Hawaii would pass and I would not be in it. I was depressed.

I was now at an age and stage in my life where I needed to think about a career. I spent much of my high school training and never thinking about what I would do if this triathlon thing did not work out. With the same zeal that I put into training, I put it in to college and university. Over the past 25-30 years, I have had many moments where I thought, "I could go back and try that Ironman again!" I would start training and quickly get injured. I would become frustrated and those old feelings of depression would creep back. About six or seven years ago I went to see a counselor and she gave me some good advice. She sternly looked at me as I was waxing poetically about wanting to return to the glory days and then she stopped me abruptly and said, "Brett, you've got the t-shirt and now it's time to move on in your life! "

I left her office feeling scolded and sometimes misunderstood. I still had a few lingering feelings of getting back on the bike and trying to get back to triathlons. A few years ago, I finally understood that there is no "going back", there is only now. The t-shirt marks your past and has nothing to do with the now. The life I lived then is in the past and it is done. I used to have a drawer full of tiny t-shirts from my past. Now those t-shirts have a new life as rags in my shop. I have a wonderfully full and exciting life and while I owe much to my past, I have let it go.

As I watch the triathletes of today go by the studio, I smile and cheer and have no more feelings of wanting to go back. I've got that t-shirt.

Brett

The 10 smartest things I did before I bought my first house

No matter what experts you recruit during the home-buying process, you're still your own best advocate. So when I told my mortgage lender that I wanted a total backup plan if the mortgage didn't get underwritten, he might have thought I was a little crazy, but I pushed anyway. After some cajoling, he went along with it, creating a backup application that relied solely on my wife's steady W-2 income to get the mortgage approved.

I'm a freelancer and independent contractor so I knew that underwriting with my income wasn't a guarantee, despite a pre-approval letter. While that might sound like a special circumstance, one in five jobs in the American workforce are now contractor positions , so it's increasingly common.

Securing a mortgage and buying a house for the first time is a daunting proposition, but regardless of your particular circumstances, having a fallback plan is essential. Don't let anyone persuade you otherwise.

In the end, my worst case scenario did end up coming to pass, with a change in my business's structure in the past two years invalidating my income, despite having the same client base and annual income. But instead of it being a life-changing ordeal, it delayed the sale by less than a week.

So swallow that feeling of being too pushy. When dealing with something as massive and life-changing as buying a house, you can't do too much to ensure you're set up for success.

A love of Costco transcends all geographical borders.

While America created the Costco phenomenon, its operations now extend far beyond the confines of this country and into Australasia, Europe, and Asia.

Costco opened its first Japan location in 1999 and since then has grown its presence to 26 stores, which span the breadth of the country.

The Japanese arm of the business is a wholly owned subsidiary of Costco US. While it stocks several US brands and Costco private-label products, there are some big differences between the experiences of shopping in both locations.
