President Donald Trump scolded Democrats for doing
"nothing" to work on a "DACA fix" while he and Republicans head
to West Virginia to discuss the issue.
Democrats booed Trump's immigration plan when he
outlined it at the State of the Union address, but have yet to
present a counter-proposal.
President Donald Trump broke a brief period of Twitter
silence on Thursday morning to announce a trip to West Virginia —
and to scold the Democrats' top leadership.
"Heading to beautiful West Virginia to be with great members of
the Republican Party. Will be planning Infrastructure and
discussing Immigration and DACA, not easy when we have no support
from the Democrats," Trump tweeted, adding that tax reform passed
in December without a single Democrat voting for it in the
Senate.
"March 5th is rapidly approaching," Trump tweeted, referencing the deadline to codify
the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, which
allows children illegally brought into the US to stay.
"Democrats are doing nothing about DACA. They Resist,
Blame, Complain and Obstruct - and do nothing. Start pushing
Nancy Pelosi and the Dems to work out a DACA fix, NOW!" Trump
concluded.
During Trump's State of the Union address, he outlined a
four-part plan for immigration
reform that met with boos from Democratic
congress members. Fact checkers found that Trump made
misleading or false claims
about the nature of some immigration programs during the speech,
but his plan did offer a path to full citizenship for 1.8 million
in the DACA program.
Democrats previously accepted promises from the White House
that a deal over DACA could be made in the future when they
agreed to end the government shutdown in January.
But Trump's proposal also includes $25 billion in funding
for the construction of new segments of a border wall
between the US and Mexico, which Trump describes as porous and a
key entry point for criminals.
Additionally, Trump's proposal for a $1.5 trillion
infrastructure renewal appears dead in the
water.
