A falling tree hit a BBC newsman as he reported on Hurricane Lane

BBC newsman James Cook got hit by a tree while he was reporting on Hurricane Lane in Hawaii, the network said.

The tree can be heard breaking apart and tumbling down on Friday as Cook reported on the radio. The falling tree apparently knocked Cook over in the process.

"Well, that was unexpected," he quipped, reassuring people nearby that he was unhurt. Some of his equipment didn't fare as well, though.

"Oh, it smashed my laptop," Cook said.

Hawaii's Big Island received torrential downpours as Hurricane Lane inched closer on Friday.

The city of Hilo was waist-deep in floodwater as the Category 2 storm moved in, the Associated Press reported, adding that nearly three feet of rain had fallen within a 48-hour period.

Meteorologists say Lane could turn westward by Saturday and brush along Oahu, Hawaii's most-populated island.
